In Memoriam - Robert Gage

Robert Gage, our official clinician, achieved numerous titles throughout his illustrious career, competing both in the United States and Europe. An integral part of a quartet of standout riders, including Susie Hutchinson, Hap Hansen, and Robert Ridland, Gage emerged under the tutelage of the legendary coach Jimmy Williams, leaving an indelible mark on international Show Jumping. Over his enviable career, Gage earned prestigious accolades such as AGA Rider of the Year in consecutive years, four-time West Coast Rider of the Year, and a three-time World Cup team member. Consecutively, he claimed the coveted "Rolex Crown of Excellence," bestowed upon the Grand Prix rider with the most wins in the country.Known for his speed in the Grand Prix ring, Gage fearlessly galloped at warp speed to conquer the most challenging obstacles, consistently nailing the perfect distance. Piloting renowned horses like Largo, Furst Z, and Sage, Gage left an indelible mark on the equestrian world.

 
 

Beyond his riding career, he gained equal fame as a coach, with his students securing over 25 different Equitation Medal Finals, including two USET Finals Championships. Gage's coaching prowess extended to Young Riders Championships, where his students from four different zones excelled as individual medalists, fueled by his intensity and contagious competitive fire.As a coach and clinician, Gage's influence reached far and wide, with clinics conducted throughout the continental U.S., as well as in New Zealand, South Korea, Alaska, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Mexico. Notable Grand Prix riders, such as Pablos Barrios of Venezuela, benefited from Gage's guidance on their path to highly successful careers. Additionally, Gage served as an "R" rated USEF Judge, presiding over top horse shows across the United States. His multifaceted expertise also extended to course designing, a challenge he particularly relished. Sadly, Robert Gage passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and passion for the sport.
